Its safe to say that Ralph Lauren is the father of modern American menswear. His name is recognized across the globe for the style of the quintessential american man. Today, the Ralph Lauren Corporation operates a total of 631 locations worldwide, with 27 brands falling under the management of Mr. Lauren and his corporation. All of this combined makes him one of the 150 wealthiest men on the planet.

Ralph Lauren’s success starts from humble beginnings.

Born Ralph “Lifshitz” on Oct 14, 1939 in the Bronx, New York. When he was just 15 years old, he made the decision to change his last name to Lauren, due to mockery in the school system. His childhood was humble, like most in his neighborhood. However, Ralph carefully chose childhood hero’s such as John F. Kennedy and James Stewart.

Dropping out of college after two years of classes, Ralph Lauren enlisted in the Army. He served from 1962-1964. After the Army, he went to work for Brooks Brothers and later became a salesman for a tie company. It was in 1966, inspired by the neckwear of Douglas Fairbanks Jr., he started producing ties from the fabric in a drawer in the Empire State Building.

It was Neiman Marcus who gave Ralph his first break, placing an order for 100 dozen neckties from the young entrepreneur. Then in 1967, with backing from Norman Hiton, he opened his first necktie store, selling ties under the name “Polo.” 1971 brought his first Polo Boutique on Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles. A year later, the first ” Polo Shirt with a Pony” was sold in a number of different color ways. From there, the story of Ralph Lauren has evolved into apart of the fabric of this country.
